Chromium oxide supplies Cr2O3. Dense opaque John Deere green. Refractory. Fumes above cone 8. High tin (5%+) tin and small amounts of Cr yield Cr - Sn pinks. Zinc + Cr = brown. Lead + Cr = oranges (Otto's texture glaze). Used to produce greens chrome-tin pinks and (in low temperature lead glazes) yellows reds, and oranges. With zinc, forms zinc chromate (brown). Very powerful colorant, usually requires less than 2%. Tends to volatize during firing, causing tin-bearing glazes in the kiln to blush pink. Insoluble in water and nearly insoluble in molten silicates; highly refractory. Manufactured from the mineral Chromite (FeCr2O4).
