Kaolins are clay minerals, formed by the decomposition of
feldspathic rocks. Primary kaolins are found at or near the
location of the parent rock; secondary kaolins have been
transported by water and deposited elsewhere. Kaolins are fairly
pure, and have a relatively large grain size and low plasticity
relative to some other types of clay (especially ball clays).
Kaolin is used in glazes to provide alumina and silica and to
help suspend the non-clay particles.
