Zinc oxide supplies ZnO.
Zinc oxide is produced by reducing zinc sulfide to metallic
zinc, followed by vaporization, oxidation, and condensation.
Zinc oxide is used in stoneware glazes in oxidation, usually as
an auxiliary flux to start the melt. Larger amounts may promote
opacity through growth of Willemite crystals (Zn2SiO4). Large,
fan-shaped crystals can develop with a proper glaze formulation
and firing schedule.
There is some debate about the role of zinc oxide in reduction;
some sources say that it reduces to metallic zinc above 1742F,
which immediately boils and leaves the glaze as a toxic gas.
Many people have reported that removing a 1-3% addition of zinc
oxide from a high-fire reduction glaze makes no noticeable
difference in the fired product.
Zinc oxide readily combines with H2O to form zinc hydroxide;
this may result in a higher shrinkage of the raw glaze and
subsequent crawling. The raw zinc oxide may be calcined to
increase the density of the particles and reduce the absorption
of H2O and the attendant problems. (Hopper recommends to calcine
up to half of the zinc oxide.)
