Barium carbonate supplies BaO.
Sometimes used as a primary flux in glazes to produce satin matt
surfaces with exciting colors; can be used with boron to create
glossy surfaces. In glazes where it is a secondary component, can
often be replaced with Strontium carbonate (75% as much strontium
as there was barium, by weight).
Prepared by reducing the mineral Barite (BaSO4) to the sulfide,
then precipitating the carbonate with CO2. Note that barium
carbonate has a decomposition temperature of 1421C, and thus
when used in the raw glaze batch, some may persist after the
firing [Parmelee] (thus the main danger of barium glazes).
